Take-Home Exam Essay
RE109: The Benedictines
Take-Home Exam Question

Answer ONE of the following questions. It is to be typed, 1 page and handed in on Tuesday, May 24, 2011.
1.      At the 2nd Vatican Council in the 1960s, one of the topics taken up by the pope and council fathers was the issue of religious life. In their resulting decree they said: The adaptation and renewal of the religious life includes both the constant return to the sources of all Christian life and to the original spirit of the institutes and their adaptation to the changed conditions of our time (Perfectae Caritatis, no. 2). Based on what you’ve learned from your brief study of the Rule of Benedict and a quick survey of monastic history since St. Benedict’s death (A.D. 547), do you believe the monks at Delbarton are faithful to their heritage? Explain.
2.       Based on what you’ve learned from your brief study of the Rule of Benedict and a quick survey of monastic history since St. Benedict’s death (A.D. 547), is the RB a dusty and distant ancestor of a bygone era, or is it a timeless document that still has much to offer today? Explain.

Prayer of St. Anselm

O Lord my God,

teach my heart this day where and how to see You,

where and how to find You.

You have made me and remade me,

and You have bestowed on me all the good things I possess,

and still I do not know You.

I have not yet done that for which I was made.

Teach me to seek You,

for I cannot seek You unless You teach me,

or find You unless You show Yourself to me.

Let me seek You in my desire,

Let me desire You in my seeking.

Let me find You by loving You,

Let me love You when I find You.
